a beautiful wonder of the north visiting southern Ontario. Despite large crowds of excited onlookers, the bird was actively and successfully hunting. I personally observed it catch and consume 5 voles or mice this morning.
Nothing can quite describe having a great gray owl fly at you and catch a vole 6ft away from you. This bird (or any other bird) was not baited. This is a wild vole about to be swallowed by a wild Great Gray Owl.
It was interesting to see the owl mantling it's kills. There were no other birds in the area, so is this standard procedure or a response to the crowd of onlookers?
Great Gray Owl shortly after successfully pouncing on a vole.
