A brief and very distant view of the Grey Partridges somewhat exposed. Seconds later only the tops of the heads were visible as they ducked for cover. Added to life list February 2011.
Grey Partridge (at least 8, and likely more were hiding in the middle of a snow covered field)
If you can imagine opening up to a full field of snow with various patches of brush, mud and grass poking through. From a distance, this covey of Grey Partridges blends perfectly into their surroundings.
One bird briefly raises its head to take a look....that's about as good as it gets!
Horned larks were quite friendly, landing on the road beside me while observing the partridges.
Here is the full-frame view....that dot in the middle of the frame is one Gray Partridge. I was able to help some others observe the birds as well which is always a treat.
